Coffee of the Year
Created in 2012, Coffee of the Year aims to bring together the best coffees from Brazil, recognize outstanding highlights of the year, and value new origins that are transforming national production.
By awarding quality and diversity, the contest encourages crop improvement, strengthens Brazil’s position in the global scenario, and connects producers to major market opportunities.
Coffee of the Year was also a pioneer in including, from the beginning, the two species produced in Brazil – arabica and canephora (conilon/robusta) – promoting quality and giving visibility to different sensory profiles and producing regions.
How it works
The contest takes place in two phases:
- First phase: Producers from all over Brazil send their samples, which are roasted and evaluated by licensed Q-Graders and R-Graders from the Coffee Quality Institute (CQI).
- Second phase: The 180 best samples (150 arabica and 30 canephora) are presented in the Cupping Rooms, serving as a major showcase of Brazilian coffee. In this space, national and international buyers can taste the coffees and meet their producers.
Among these 180 coffees, the top 10 arabicas and top 5 canephoras are presented to SIC visitors in a blind tasting, using the filter method. Visitor voting complements the final score, helping elect the year’s great winners.
The awards ceremony takes place on the last day of SIC, revealing the most highly scored and voted coffees.
